My Top 10 Go-To Swoony Romance and Romcom Films

There’s something undeniably magical about a great romance movie. Seeing two characters lock eyes for the first time, watching as they go from bickering coworkers to lovers who are head over heels for each other, or witnessing their unforgettable first kiss in the rain, these moments make us believe in love all over again—and naturally, as a romance author and reader, I have a few of my faves!

The classics have set the stage for swoon-worthy cinema (I’ll be sure to highlight a few), but the past few years have gifted us with a mountain of new romantic gems that are just as heart-fluttering. I find myself inspired by these films, old and new, so if you want a little love story magic, here are some of my go-to romantic and romcom films that never fail to make my heart skip a beat.

While You Were Sleeping

Of all the classic romance films out there, this is one I adore the most. Bill Pullman is super dreamy in this! I’m always a fan of characters getting caught in little white lies that end up snowballing into bigger issues, and it’s done really well here. Mistaken identity is a truly underrated trope, and While You Were Sleeping shows it at its finest.

Love, Actually

This is one of those films that’s pure nostalgia for me. I know there are problematic storylines and half-baked characters, and I still love it. It’s not often a film can make me laugh and cry at the same time, but that scene where Jamie goes to find Aurelia where she works always does it.

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

This is the perfect rainy day romance film. This has that satisfying enemies to lovers action, so much at stake due to the nature of marriage at the time, and a superbly done hand flex!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

This film is less about the swoons for me and more about the laughs. When I’m in the mood for something funny but still a sweet HEA, then this is a top choice.

Leap Year

My first book, The Half of It, is set in Ireland, so naturally this is on the list! There are some cringe moments, mostly due to the fact that the female main character has a lot of growing to do. It’s a classic fish-out-of-water tale, and the Irish countryside for the setting is such a fun place to experience.

The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society

This film! No notes! Just go watch it. You’re welcome.

Set It Up

This was a really refreshing, fun modern romance. Glen Powell is everywhere these days due to all the Twisters popularity, but he’s been leading man material for a while, if you ask me. As someone who has worked as a personal assistant, this one felt extra relatable.

Plus One

This is probably the funniest romcom I have ever seen in my life, hands down. I was cackling at many of the moments in this film! This one captures modern relationships (and commitment-phobic partners) in a way that I think resonates with anyone who has had to date in the age of online dating.

The Broken Hearts Gallery

I adored this film, and the only bad thing I can say about it is that I wish I had thought of the premise first! This one’s funny, sweet, and innovative. The grand gesture at the end is perfectly done, and I had legit butterflies watching The Broken Hearts Gallery.

Love at First Sight

Insta-love is one of the least-liked tropes, yet somehow this film made it work. The two main characters are absolutely adorable, and while they do have an instant connection, there is so much going on conflict-wise that it’s hard to see how they’ll be able to work it out (which keeps things interesting). Also, who wouldn’t love the London setting?
